Two things:
My dad taught me how to think about math problems as pictures. I'd ask him how to do a word problem, and he say, "Have you drawn a picture?" I'd go draw a picture and drawing it how always helped me figure out what I knew and what I didn't know.
I have always connected pictures and words--words are pictures just as letters are shapes. As I have gotten older and braver in my doodling (there was a long period in my life where I decided I should not doodle or draw becuase others in my family were "better at it" and therefore it was "their thing to do and not mine" ), I have discovered that my drawings can tell me a lot.

I don't remember now where it started. My best recollection is started with the curve of the flower stem. I know and do remember I was feeling "bent" and "pulled down"
